Apologies for the great delay in updates, but things have been very busy here at DHP. We recently returned from the Independent Television Festival in Los Angeles. Whilst there we obtained agency representation at Original Artists and Wentworth & Buxbury won the award for Best Animation! We had a wonderful time at the festival and met many great people. More information can be found at www.itvfest.org

We have also (finally) completed shooting Of Land and Bounty, our fourth and final short film. It is now in the process of being edited and graded. Pictures and a trailer for the film will be available shortly.

The DHP team have just returned from a wonderful trip to the New York Television Festival. We had an absolutely amazing time, met great people and were even fortunate enough to win the 'Best Writing' Award out of the 36 Official Selection pilots! The award is listed on the website here (http://nytvf.com/newsletter_9-19-08.htm) and mentioned in The Hollywood Reporter.

Where to from here for 'Wentworth & Buxbury'? Only time will tell. In the meantime we'll keep writing more episodes and work on promoting the show. The full pilot episode will be online soon and we might even begin work on episode two on our own again in the months ahead.

We plan now to shoot 'Of Land and Bounty', our next short film, in early December.

26/08/08

Possibly our biggest news yet - the pilot of 'Wentworth & Buxbury' has been accepted as one of 36 Official Selections for this year's New York Television Festival! It's such a great opportunity, Lucas, Hayden and Tim will be flying to New York in September for the Festival. After months of hard-work, particularly from our wonderful team of animators, we now have a chance to have our work shown to some of the biggest names in the television industry! You can see a list of Official Selections here: http://www.nytvf.com/2008_ipc_selections.htm

And an article on the Festival at Broadcasting Cable here: http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/CA6587087.html

Naturally, we have had to postpone the shoot of 'Of Land and Bounty' until late November, but it will be shot this year. No doubt our next update will be from the Big Apple!

16/06/08

After an anxious wait for a response from the festival circuit regarding The Window, we're pleased to announce it has been accepted as finalist into the Rome International Film Festival (held in the USA and not Italy strangely enough). It is described by Moviemaker Magazine as 'one of the twenty festivals worldwide worth the entry fee'. Last year, 13 international films made the finalist list for the short film category, and this year we are fortunate enough to be one of those finalist. It certainly is wonderful news, and we'll let you know how it goes!

Of Land and Bounty is coming together, with more than 200 actors applying for various roles within the film. Locations have been confirmed and applications for funding are being submitted this month. Shooting is planned for September.

Wentworth & Buxbury is still in the process of being animated, and we're still hoping to get it done by June 30th in time for the New York Television Festival. Fingers crossed!

More updates to come, stay tuned!

24/04/08

Good news! YouTube have decided to incorporate us into the YouTube Partnership Program. Essentially this means that advertisements will be placed on our videos shortly, and as a result we will be offered some of the revenue generated by them. Any money this produces will of course be used for our future film endeavours and will enable us to make short films with higher production values. You can help us out by letting your friends know about us and by encouraging subscription to our videos.

We wouldn't have been offered this opportunity had it not been for all of you watching our films and subscribing, so we're very grateful!

Our next short film, 'Of Land and Bounty' is underway, with shooting planned for September. The film is set in Australia in 1874 and tells the tale of a local teacher who receives a visit from an Irish traveler with questions about his past. The script is gathering quite a lot of attention locally and we now have a professional producer on board for the first time. It's going to be our biggest one yet and we're working very hard to ensure it's the best it can be. We also plan on filming a comprehensive 'Behind The Scenes' segment for YouTube which we will more than likely release before the film itself.

Thanks again to everyone for your support and be sure to check back on here for updates on our progress.

11/04/08

We have selected the winning entry for the competition we held on NewGrounds (Flash Animation Website) to determine who would be Head Animator for the pilot episode of Wentworth & Buxbury. Each applicant was given a 30 second sound clip from the pilot recording, as well as a copy of the entire pilot script. Congratulations to Nicklaus Liow for his amazing demonstration of animating prowess, which can be seen by clicking 'Television' on the left-hand side of the page.

Other entrants have offered their services as Assistant Animators and production is now underway, with the rather ambitious aim of having the 22-minute pilot completed in time for the New York Television Festival - Deadline June 30th, 2008

Black Button has received an Honorable Mention in International Film Festival 'Indie Short Film Festival' based in the United States. We're the only Australian film to make the list.

In other news, professional producer Belinda Green has agreed to come onboard for the next short film, 'Of Land and Bounty' which is now in pre-production

23/03/08

Unfortunately, Black Button didn't win the YouTube award. 'My Name Is Lisa' came first, a very worthy winner. By all accounts we came second, and even to get into the final six on all of YouTube is a huge honour. Thanks to everyone that voted!

We can announce the title of our next short film, 'Of Land and Bounty', set in Australia in 1874 and now in pre-production.

14/03/07

Exciting news from YouTube! We just found out Black Button has been nominated as one of the six finalists for a YouTube award. The winner receives a prize and is flown to New York! We'd love your help, so if you could head to the following address:

http://www.youtube.com/ytawards07

and vote for Black Button in the Short Film section, we'd be very grateful indeed! You can vote once a day until 11:59pm, March 19th. Thanks everyone!

In other news, we've just finished a send out of The Window to a few film festivals both locally and abroad, and will find out how it went in the months ahead.

We're also working on two new short films. One is our most ambitious project to date; set in colonial Australia in 1874! More updates on each of them in the next few weeks.

24/02/08

Firstly, exciting news regarding our animated comedy series, 'Wentworth & Buxbury"! We have recorded the entire pilot episode voice-track with professional actors in a privately owned recording studio. The recording took nearly 6 hours but we're very happy with the result. We're now in search of an animator and are confident the talent at NewGrounds will provide one. A new 'TV' page will appear on the DHP website shortly, where you'll be able to read more about Wentworth & Buxbury. Also, look out for behind the scenes stills at the recording studio and a drawing of what the characters might look like.

In equally exciting news, our Key Grip and Webmaster, David Illingworth, has taken the first steps towards a wonderful career in the industry! He was recently hired by a Film Crew Agency as a Grip, and his first job was on Saturday; as a Lifter and Lugger on the set of Steven Spielberg's huge new miniseries, 'The Pacific'. Not a bad place to start! We all wish him the best of luck and continued success in the industry.

05/02/08

The Window is now up on YouTube! You can see it here. We look forward to getting your feedback!

31/01/08

We found at that we didn't make it into the finals of Tropfest sadly. Still, it was quite an honour to be shortlisted, and the festival run of The Window has only just begun! What we plan to do now is recut the film now there's no time restriction, to about 8 or so minutes and put back into it some things we hated having to cut to make the 7 min version.

So once it's recut and we work out a bit of a festival strategy, the film will be put up on YouTube, probably in the next week or two. Thanks to everyone for the well-wishes and emails, we really appreciate it!

In other news, Campsite will be played at the Blue Dandenong Film Festival some time between February 15th-17th. We'll let you know the details as soon as we know them.

We're also working hard on a feature film script that's really starting to take shape, and will probably be the main focus of our attention in the months ahead.

23/01/08

Very exciting news! We've been notified by Tropfest that The Window has been shortlisted for the largest short film festival in the world! We're now in the final 60 or so of more than 600 entries, and find out in the next two weeks whether we've made it to the final 16. We'll keep you posted with further developments.

16/01/08

Lucas was recently invited to join TheActorsTV, a networking site established by Eduardo Ponti (son of Carlos Ponti and Sophie Lauren). You can see his new profile page here

12/01/08

Apologies for the time it's taken to update, but we've been flat out working on 'The Window'. We're pleased to announce it is finally finished, both a Director's Cut of 10 minutes and a 7 minute cut made for Tropfest 2008. It's taken 3 weeks of editing and a fairly brutal cut to get a 15 page script to 7 minutes, but we're very happy with the results. Raphael Duprez (Darkened Escape) has composed a fantastic score for the film and Risk Sound once again came to the rescue with free post-production sound correction.

Open Channel provided us with the editing suite and were very helpful all along the way. We look forward to getting your opinions on the film. It's been a real labour of love! Unfortunately, we can't display the film in public or on YouTube until after we find out how we've gone in Tropfest (to be eligble, Tropfest films must be a world premiere). We'll find out if we're shortlisted on January 22nd; if we aren't we'll upload immediately to YouTube.

In other news, Campsite (and not Black Button, this time) has been selected for the Blue Dandenong's Youth Film Festival to be held in mid-February.

Photos from the shoot of The Window will be available shortly.

01/11/07

Some good news, just one week away from shooting The Window! 'Love Your Work' Short Film Festival was a great success, with both Campsite and Black Button taking out awards. Of the 13 films on show, Campsite ranked 5th and Black Button, 2nd! We've won more than a thousand dollars worth of prizes as a result, all of which will greatly help future film endeavours. These include:

  • 3 Day Hire of a professional editing suite at Open Channel (we'll use this for The Window, of course!)
  • One Year subscription to Encore Magazine
  • One Year subscription to the Australian Film Institute
  • One Year subscription to Screen Hub
  • 2008 Encore Directory

We owe many thanks, particularly to Open Channel and to all those that came along and supported us.

We also appeared briefly in Wednesday's copy of Melbourne newspaper MX (seen below)

Once again, our thanks to everyone for their support!

Black Button was a finalist in tonight's 'Electric Shorts' Film Festival 2007, a part of the Melbourne Film Festival. A screening rather than a competition, it was a wonderful night with an eclectic mix of short films ranging from Action to Experimental. BB looked great up on the big screen and was received very well by the audience. Thanks to everyone who came!

29/09/07

Black Button has been featured on "ShortoftheWeek.com" and has received a great 1-page review on there. You can see it here

We'll be releasing a video on YouTube in the next week or so discussing what has been happening in 'The Window' preproduction.

11/08/07

Thanks again to DearCinema, who have written about and linked to our 'Making of Black Button' clips! See it here

25/07/07

More Black Button news! BB has received first place in the DearCinema Short Film Festival! Click here to read the festival's comments on the film, and click here to see the winner announcement.

In other news, The Window has undergone yet another rewrite and is a substantially different story now. We're a lot happier with this version. It's going to take a LOT of effort to get this one of the ground, particularly because we want at least two professional actors for the lead roles and the locations we require will be quite difficult to obtain.

There are a few other interesting things happening at DHP at the moment, including a potential attachment to a television show as apprentice writers, but we'll wait until we know more before announcing details.

04/07/07

Big news! Black Button has been featured on the front page of YouTube!! The hits and comments are skyrocketing! Campsite is also receiving exposure as a result. For the most part, the comments have been resoundingly positive. Further motivation for us to ensure our next short is posted on YouTube as a first priority, and sent to festivals as a distant second!

20/06/07

"Black Button" has been featured on the front page of Medium Magazine. Click here to see it.

"The Window" is nearing production. We are hoping to cast Robert Grubb for one of the lead roles.

"Campsite" DVD will be available shortly and will include loads of goodies, including a copy of Darkened Orchestra Project's album!

Also our online store is back up and running sorry for the delays.

13/06/07

Due to a server problem our Online Store is down. If you would like to order a copy of black button please Click Here and email us with how many copies you would like as well as you name and address and we shall email you back with how to pay. We apologise for the problem and should have the store back online soon.

Thank you

We're pleased to announce that Ed Paxton's fantastic original score for Black Button is now available for download. Click here. (Right click Save As) Please remember that this score is not available for public use. If you'd like to use it, email us first to discuss it. Enjoy!

Campsite has been released on YouTube. Watch them here:

- The 11m 06s Director's Cut of the Film with Never Before Seen Footage

- "Making of" Featurette, Including Interview with Robert Grubb

- Audio Commentary with Lucas Crandles & Hayden Grubb

- Production Stills

23/05/07

Campsite is finished! Just a couple more days to tighten it up and it will be on YouTube. Unfortunately, due to YouTube's recently enforced 10 minute upload limit, the film will be split into two parts.

Now it is on to the next project, which looks to be "The Window". We will begin pre-production for it next week.

11/5/07

Black Button is currently the Editor's Pick, most recently featured film in YouTube's 'Film and Animation' Category. You can see it here

11/5/07

More news on the Black Button front. We've been given a tip from one of the YouTube editors that BB will be featured in the Film and Animation category in the next couple of days!

DVD copies of Black Button are going into production right now. Estimated cost will be $10 AUD plus postage. Each DVD will contain the original cut of the film in DVD quality, the Director's Cut, an Audio Commentary from Hayden and Lucas, Production Stills and a "Making of" featurette including interview with Robert Grubb.

The 'Films' page has also been updated. Some stills from Campsite have been put up there if you're interested in a sneak peak.

Lastly, after months of deliberation, Hayden and Lucas have finally settled on a feature film to develop to completion. We're excited about this one, having just begun the research phase (lots and lots of books to read)! All we'll say is, it's got something to do with Spain and the reign of the Spanish Inquisition....

09/05/07

'Black Button' is now credited on the Fitzroy Shorts website, here

'Campsite' has it's soundtrack confirmed. French artist 'Darkened Escape' will be providing the music from his amazing album 'The Importance of Being Unheard'. He's excited about the project. Some delays, only a few minutes to go of the final cut before it's uploaded.

04/05/07

More good news on the Black Button front! Email received today regarding the screening on Wednesay...

Subject: Hiya - Congratulations....Punters Choice Award - May 2nd

'The Campsite' shoot took place over March 16th and 17th and went off without too many problems. We had some very stringent time restraints due to actor availability, but we got it done with minutes to spare. It's off to the editing room now. As soon as it's done, we will upload it straight to YouTube.

'Black Button' has just reached 10,000 views on YouTube, so thanks to everyone who has had a look and commented! If you would like to have copy of the film that can be saved to your PC, iPod, phone etc, a copy can be downloaded from the short film website Si Mi. It costs $0.39, and purchasing a copy will support DHP in an online short film competition, so we would be very grateful if you did so.

More updates on the way!

New Newsletter. If you would like to join the Dark Heart Newsletter all you need to do is sign up to our Forum and join the newsletter usergroup and you will receive regular updates on Dark Heart Productions.

15/02/07

Firstly, a big thank you to everyone for supporting us on YouTube! At last count we were on a 4.5 star average rating and just over 4,000 views, which is quite remarkable considering the film has only been online for a fortnight. We will be shooting a little 'Making of Black Button' short for release on YouTube and the DVD. Hopefully that will be done in the next 3-4 weeks. A special thank you goes out to Tessa, creator of the Robert Grubb website - www.robertgrubb.com - who has done an excellent PR campaign for Black Button in the Netherlands and beyond!

In other news, we have a confirmed date for our next shoot! March 16th (which is, coincidentally, precisely one year after we shot Black Button) we will be going out into the wilderness to film a project we have up until now kept relatively secret. The film is called 'Campsite'. With a skeleton crew and only one day to shoot it, it will be quite a challenge. When it is finished, we will release it immediately on YouTube.

Once again, thanks to everyone for the YouTube support and we'll keep you posted on any further developments!

02/02/07

Well everyone it has taken a while but our forum is finally up. You will have to pardon the colour scheme for the moment as we are still designing a new one.

Please Sign up to keep you up to date on all Dark Heart News.

26/01/07

Unfortunately, Black Button was not selected for Tropfest. However this may be a blessing in disguise, as we now own the rights to the film again and have decided to open it up to the world forum. You can now view the film on YouTube by Clicking Here. Please feel free to rate and comment on the film as we would love your feedback.

08/01/07

Fear not, Black Button was submitted on time and complete. Apparently we find out if we're in on the 22nd of January. Fingers crossed our next update is a good one.

Also, 'The Window' is on its third draft and is nearing production.

07/12/06

Black Button has been cut, complete with sneeze, and the soundtrack is almost finished. Production stills have been printed and all the necessary documentation has been completed. We hope to submit the film to Tropfest in the next fortnight.

Lucas has also completed the first draft of 'The Window' and actor friend Nick Gell has agreed to play the lead role. We hope to begin shooting before March.

02/11/06

The Short and Sharp Pitching Competition was conducted last night, with Hayden and Lucas pitching 'Lift' in front of three prominent industry professionals, including acclaimed director Alkinos Tsilimidos, and a general audience.

Though 'Lift' did not win, we gained a great deal of experience, received positive feedback and met some great people. We will endeavour to fund and film 'Lift' ourselves in the coming months.

'Black Button' has been edited down to precisely seven minutes, in accordance with Tropfest entrance requirements. We have to shoot a little more footage and have Ed Paxton complete his chilling soundtrack for the film - once that is done, 'Black Button' will finally be finished and ready for submission to Tropfest.

18/10/06

Paul McCosh of Risk Sound completed his work on the soundtrack of Black Button today and has done a fantastic job. We will begin editing the 7 minute cut of the film over the next couple of weeks.

12/10/06

Firstly, some good news! 'Lift' has been shortlisted for the Short and Sharp Pitching Competition run by Open Channel. Lucas and Hayden will be pitching against six other groups and the winners will receive $3,500 worth of equipment hire, a producer and distribution for their film. Here is an excerpt from the Open Channel Member Newsletter:

________________

FINALISTS ANNOUNCED Once again the calibre of entries was high, but after much deliberation the following seven applicants have been chosen to pitch their stories on Wednesday, November 1 at Cinema Nova.

Congratulations go to:

Adam Del Mastro

Amanda Finnis

Hayden Grubb

Katrina Mathers

Glenda Tobias

Nicholas Verso

Ian Waldron

Good luck to all our pitchers!

________________

All are welcome to attend. Now, all we have to do is write the script... Additionally, Lucas has been in Europe for the past or month or so and whilst away has settled on a feature idea to begin developing with Hayden. We'll keep you posted on that too.

28/08/06

Open Channel have decided to delay the Short and Sharp Pitching Competition for two months for no apparent reason. We will know in October if we have been accepted.

Lucas has now got five feature ideas on the boiler, none of which have been developed seriously as yet. A feature script take months (often years) to develop, so it's a matter of selecting one worthy of that much effort. We'll keep you posted.

Something unmentioned previously; Hayden has been working for two years on an animation series entitled 'Wentworth and Buxbury' with co-writer Timothy Nash. Since Lucas' return from the army, he has been 'let into the fold' of this production and subsequently the small production house 'Orange Table Productions' has been viciously annexed into the greater kingdom of Dark Heart. 'Wentworth and Buxbury' is a comedic animation about two rival British supervillains. We have completed two of a planned six episode season.

07/08/06

Lucas and Hayden have each submitted script treatments to the Short and Sharp Pitching Competition being conducted by Open Channel, Lucas submitted 'The Window' and Hayden, 'Lift'. Eight successful applications are announced on August 24th and of those, one will receive $3,500 equipment hire funding and access to a producer. If only one of us gets through the other will join in on the selected process, hopefully ensuring we both have at least one shot at the funding.

Lucas has also completed the first draft of his script, 'Love Dan'.

26/07/06

Hayden is now developing the elevator idea, with the working title of 'The Lift'.

Lucas is working on two short scripts:

'The Window' - Michael's watch has stopped at 2:57pm. His memories are confused, his thoughts vague and incoherent. He searches for answers at his local pub. What he finds will challenge his understanding of existence itself.

The Window has been in development for 6 months and is based on a short story Lucas wrote in 2005.

'Love Dan' - When Dan learns of his girlfriend's murder, he vows to avenge her death.

Love Dan, a psychological thriller, is a short play Lucas has begun developing for a university playwrighting course that he hopes to translate into film in the coming months.

04/07/06

Another short is on its way! We've decided upon a setting, the story and characters are developing and its going in a direction even we didn't see coming. The only clue we'll give you is...its set inside an elevator.
